Apprenticeship
An apprentice starts in our program at 50% of journeyman's pay. The apprentice attends related training and works on the job. By doing this the apprentice receives a 5% raise approximately every six months. At the end of four years the apprentice graduates and becomes a Journeyman Iron Worker (JIW). Iron Workers Local Union 272 has been a part of the South Florida community since 1919. We are committed to raising the living conditions
of our members and providing the Iron Working Industry with skilled Ironworkers. We do this in three ways.
Training apprentices through our state accredited apprenticeship program.
Journeyman upgrading to improve the skills of our members.
Organizing skilled tradesmen into the Union from nonunion employers.
Journeyman Upgrades
Journeymen have the ability to upgrade their skills and learn new ones. They, along with the apprentices, are taught by School Board Certified Instructors who attend the University of San Diego annually to sharpen their own skills and learn the new technologies of the Trade. Journeyman Upgrades are done through the apprenticeship Program.
